Is an object only what we see? Does an image complete its meaning the moment it reveals itself?
The Other Side of Things focuses on the unseen meanings carried by objects, forms, and the everyday in Ebru Sıcakyüz’s paintings.
Drawing on her background in textile design, Sıcakyüz brings a tactile and formal memory into the contemporary language of painting, treating objects not simply as elements to be represented, but as images that carry their own memories and associations. The texture of fabric, the structure of patterns, the movement of lines, and the pictorial surface become layers of personal and cultural memory within her work.
As seen in works such as The Metaphysics of Things, Behind Things, Whom Do Objects Follow?, No One Remembers, and The Context of the Observer, the familiar never remains merely what it appears to be. When an object is placed within a different context, when a form encounters another kind of memory, or when the viewer’s perspective shifts, its meaning begins to transform.
Sıcakyüz’s paintings therefore exist at the threshold between the visible and the invisible, the object and memory, reality and personal association. Each form on the painted surface moves beyond being something simply observed, becoming a carrier of another layer of meaning.
The Other Side of Things invites the viewer to consider not only what an object or image is, but what it becomes when we look at it.
