Based in Bodrum, Su Başkan is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice is rooted in a continuous internal inquiry into existence and the layered nature of the material world. Following her degree from Dokuz Eylül University and an extensive career in corporate management, Başkan consistently deepened her artistic exploration by experimenting with diverse materials and methodologies. With the establishment of SuB Art Studio, her work evolved into a tangible interdisciplinary practice focused on sculpture, ceramics, and surface investigations.
Başkan’s work emerges from a dialogue between the resistance of the material and the artist's intuitive unconscious. Drawing inspiration from archaic objects, incidental shapes, and the cyclical movements of nature, she often gravitates toward "aquatic" and amorphous forms. Utilizing hand-building techniques, she constructs a visual language that balances fragility and resilience. Her forms sometimes develop from a preliminary sketch, while at other times, they arise spontaneously through the inherent will of the clay.
For the artist, the creative process is not merely about making an object but is a state of "becoming." The organic marks and the uncertainties of the firing process in her work resonate with echoes of archaic forms preserved in collective memory. Inviting the viewer into direct contact with these forms, Su Başkan continues a creative journey of ongoing discovery and transformation, poised to extend into new disciplines in the future.
