Ivana Urso’s artistic journey is shaped within the dynamic tension between Sicily’s deep-rooted cultural heritage and the rigor of contemporary abstraction. Her formative years at the Academy of Fine Arts in Catania deepened her sensitivity toward surface and texture, while her subsequent research into glass fusion techniques in Rome introduced the structural power of light and translucency to her practice. For Urso, painting is not merely a means of representation but an experimental field where the material is encouraged to find its own voice.
In 2017, upon joining the "Pentastrattismo" movement, her visual language evolved into a more refined and expressive character. Pushing the boundaries of gestural abstraction, Urso invites the viewer into a quest for cultural continuity through layers, lines, and fragmented words. The "folds" often encountered in her work function not just as physical forms, but as spatial voids where memory and emotion are preserved.
Recognized with numerous national and international awards, Urso continues her practice with a relentless search for tactile depth. By bringing together the fragility of glass with the permanence of pigment, and the silence of matter with the resonance of a gesture, she presents the viewer not just with the visible, but with the very geometry of sensation.
