Christophe Correia’s practice is rooted in a dual childhood memory, moving from the Portuguese immigrant suburbs of Paris to the ancient, cultural landscapes of northern Portugal, shaped by the resonant sounds of bass drums and Celtic bagpipes. Winning his first drawing competition at the age of five before he even knew how to tie his shoelaces remains a foundational testament to a lifelong, serious commitment to the pencil. Discovering the life drawings of a relative who taught plastic arts further cemented this early connection to painting and drawing.
Although his academic path led him toward product design rather than fine arts, creative practice remained an uninterrupted, vital necessity. A decisive turning point arrived in 2018 during a road trip through southern Spain. Traveling from Figueres and Cadaqués to Seville, art revealed itself not as a secondary interest, but as his true direction in life, prompting a serious and enduring commitment to oil painting.
Today, Correia explores inner realities through a vocabulary of symbolic and metaphorical imagery. Nourished by personal experiences, anxieties, and moments of deep introspection, his canvases create a space where emotion and memory meet, guided by the very same sense of wonder he felt as a child holding a pencil.
